Yes, Virginia, it is possible to generate publicity for FREE, even if you know next to nothing about promotion on the internet.

Point. Click. Register. Compose. Post.
That is all there is to it.

Why?
Because all the really hard work is being left to the REAL computer geeks...the SUPPORT PEOPLE on the other end of the BIG BOY SITES! And what is more, they WANT you to succeed!

Ladies and gentlemen, the dirty little secret (as told to me only a few months ago by the avowed drunken Marxist who was teaching my SUNY Sociology 101 section at the time ) is that there are only about five or six multi-media megaliths right now, who, between them, are controlling the mass information flow for the entire planet.

How did they get so big?
Because they are SELLING THE AD SPACE to the rest of us!
They even SELL you the PRIVILEGE of NOT BEING BOTHERED by their own ads!

Why? Because they know that as a user advanced enough to want your own business, you will probably buy ANYWAY, as and when you are ready, and spend even MORE!

A funny thing happens to advertising on the internet...it works in REVERSE.
With print, television and radio, you put out your ad, someone sees it, and they BUY the FUNCTIONALITY of your new product. You usually get your sale the FIRST TIME they take action.

On the net, you need to BUILD EXPENSIVE FUNCTIONALITY (such as a "free" email account, or the "trial version" of a new computer game) in order to get people to CLICK your ad. That means that an individual user will probably be taking actions of one kind or another SEVERAL TIMES before you make your first sale...but as soon as you lose his attention for more than a few SECONDS, he has surfed away and given YOUR sale to the competition!

So you need repeated contacts and "upsells" even before he has parted with a penny.

And within the tech markets, the same problem gets even worse...because hundreds or thousands of dollars and man-hours, by a whole TEAM of people, goes into the development of EVERY new software product or application.

Why do I offer all of my sponsor links to FREE programs for FREE to my users?
Because in order to make any MONEY out of my TIME, I need to make CONTACTS.
Why do I want 1001 links on the site? Because then I have 1001 different ways for my contacts to find me.

How can I make contacts?
By first discussing everything I can think of, with anyone I can reach, except for my business.
MEANWHILE: Post a hot link to my site IN MY PROFILE or my "cool links" section...

on topic for where you are.

If the moderator does not allow signature files, HTML coding, or fancy animated graphics, don't use them. Chances are that if you know your subject, and you hang in there a while, SOMEBODY will come to YOU.

UPDATE (09-14-2004): The program which used to occupy this space has been dropped from the Wolfspyder Project. I cannot reach any support people within this program to negotiate error-correction. If I am able to find support people with whom to effectively resolve the issues in question, I will gladly rejoin this program. In the meantime, the FML stack number is open for reassignment.

I am well aware that I have not been here to pay proper attention to the site or to correct some major errors in layout/template design in several months. For at least two of those months, my computer was completely down due to a worn-out fan assembly.

My brother James also promised me quite some time ago that he had (at least) a referral to a decent book on blog design...I have yet to see it, and just now he is in the middle of a major move to Florida.

Ok...as far as I can see, I AM allowed to use this as a "commercial site" as long as I don't attempt to interfere with the other blogger ads which are already here. Of course, this is effective as of TODAY, when I know NEXT TO NOTHING about internet promotion.
